Classic-tier torsos typically separate into 12–20 parts covering major organs at a basic level, while Deluxe/advanced versions add finer subdivision (e.g., separable lung lobes, a multi-part heart, detachable digestive segments) and often include the head/brain or a reproductive organ set. Match the part count to your course depth — an intro anatomy survey rarely needs the highest-part-count version, and paying for it just adds replacement-part risk without added teaching value.
A dual-sex torso ships with both male and female reproductive organ inserts, letting one model serve both anatomy units instead of buying two separate torsos. It does mean two additional small removable parts to track and store securely — worth noting in your inventory log so a missing insert doesn't get mistaken for shipping damage.
An open-back torso exposes the vertebral column and posterior organ relationships (kidneys, spinal cord) in addition to the standard front view, useful if your course covers posterior anatomy or back-related pathology. A standard torso only opens from the front/anterior side. If your program teaches spine-organ relationships as part of the torso unit, confirm the open-back feature specifically — it's not universal across all torso lines.
Usually yes — most life-size SOMSO torso models are built with individually molded, removable organs specifically so damaged or lost pieces (a stomach, a lung lobe, an intestine section) can be replaced without buying an entirely new torso. Send us the model name/number and which organ is missing, and we'll confirm compatibility.
Life-size torsos give more realistic proportional relationships and are easier for group demonstration in a lecture setting; miniature/desktop versions save shelf and storage space and cost less, but with reduced organ detail and fewer removable parts. If your program has multiple lab stations with limited storage, miniatures let you outfit more stations for the same budget — just confirm the part count still covers your curriculum.
Muscular torsos are generally more delicate at the muscle-layer edges and paint detailing than a straightforward organ-focused torso, so they typically warrant more careful handling instructions for student use to avoid chipping or wear at raised muscle boundaries.
Torso models come in fixed configurations by manufacturer, so you can't customize an individual unit, but there's usually enough variation across the line (dual-sex vs. single-sex, basic vs. advanced, with/without head) that we can help match an existing configuration closely to your curriculum priorities rather than paying for organ systems you won't teach.
